Charon Henning, Program Coordinator

Scientific Illustrator – Nature Journaler – Community Educator

Charon found her primary interests and the direction for her art at the intersection of nature, science, myth and literature. She received her Associate’s in Fine Art in 1993 and continued her education through the BIS degree program at George Mason University’s New Century College, earning her Individualized Studies degree through her custom-built “Multimedia Storytelling” curriculum in 2007. She completed her illustration internship at the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology in 2017 to earn her Certificate in Scientific Illustration and soon followed up with her Educator’s Certificate through National Geographic.

Since 2015 Charon has served as Art Director for Prof. Katie Hinde’s March Mammal Madness tournament, currently the largest online STEAM-related educational event, which occurs annually. She lives in Vermont where she teaches nature journaling and observation, maintaining a working illustration studio in her home which she shares with her partner and two very active cats.

Misty Kilgore, Marketing Director

Artist – Educator – Traveler

An artist from the start, Misty has worked as an illustrator, tattoo artist, art instructor and multimedia creator for well over two decades. She has traveled extensively and the inspirations collected along the way are reflected in her watercolor paintings, woodburnings and the work she does with her tattoo clientele.

Misty is the owner of Mandalatees LLC, her most recent business venture on the heels of Inkwell’s Tavern, a gathering place for those living in the vicinity of the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Inkwell’s hosted numerous community networking and fundraising events and was a popular venue for both seasoned and emerging artists and performers. Misty also conducted art workshops in various techniques as both instructor and manager, giving a platform to local creators to connect with new markets and opportunities.

Through her work in traditional media combined with personal experience, Misty has developed a skill set that conveys incredible emotion and story within a single image and this, in combination with her teaching skills, makes her an indispensable part of 18Hz Arts Collective. She seeks out locations that have stories to tell, especially those that have fallen into disrepair and are fading from memory, and records the artistic beauty in them. She lives in the mountains of West Virginia with her family and two dogs.

Patty Walker, Researcher & Historian

Researcher – Historian – Sequential Artist

Patty is a medical editor by trade and a historian since age 8, when she discovered that a neighbor two doors down was a Holocaust survivor. As a teenager, this quiet fascination and desire to learn grew more expansive. Compelled by a recurring dream of being a Union soldier looking for water and coming across a contaminated well, she read all she could find about the American Civil War and visited the battlefields in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. She has remained enthusiastically curious about civilian life and day-to-day living in the past and present, and 18Hz Arts Collective is incredibly fortunate to have her knowledge and expertise at hand.

When she’s not immersed in exploring historical sites, Patty is an avid nature photographer, documenting amazing things from chipmunks to crows, moths to spiders, and bread mold to wildflowers. She is fond of sketching and using watercolors and pen & ink on her illustrations. She has thousands of books in her house and strives to read at least 52 books per year. She is fluent in Italian and is learning Spanish and dipping a toe into French and German. She volunteers at dog adoption events for a DC shelter, adores long, rolling conversations with like-minded people, plays recreational soccer, and sees at least one movie every week. She lives in Maryland with her family and a very loyal German Shepherd.
